What is Online Therapy and how can it help you?

Online therapy, also known as e-therapy or teletherapy, refers to the provision of mental health services through the internet.

Online therapy has become increasingly popular as its is accessible, convenient, and accessing the internet has become so much easier.

Here are some key points about online therapy that you might want to think about before signing up for online therapy with any online therapist.

  1. Communication Platforms: Online therapy sessions can take place through various digital platforms, such as video calls, phone calls, chat, or even email. Video calls, in particular, provide a more face-to-face experience, allowing therapists and clients to interact in real-time. I am happy to work via video, audio, live chat or email - to suit you.
  2. Accessibility: Online therapy makes mental health support more accessible to individuals who may face barriers to traditional in-person therapy, such as those living in remote areas, individuals with physical disabilities, or those with busy schedules.
  3. Privacy and Comfort: Clients can engage in therapy from the comfort of their own homes, which may contribute to a sense of privacy and comfort. This can be particularly beneficial if you may feel anxious about attending in-person sessions.
  4. Diverse Therapeutic Approaches: Online therapy supports various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, and more. Therapists can adapt their methods to the online format. I use an number of approaches, starting with your needs as the client.
  5. Research and Effectiveness: Research suggests that online therapy can be as effective as traditional face-to-face therapy for many mental health conditions.
  6. Legal and Ethical Considerations: Online therapy practitioners need to adhere to legal and ethical standards, ensuring the confidentiality and security of client information. Licensing requirements may also vary depending on the jurisdiction. I will send you a handbook which covers all these points. Whilst these are not very exciting subjects, it is very important both for you as the client and me as the therapist, that we take note of these.
  7. Training and Competence: It's essential for individuals seeking online therapy to choose reputable platforms or licensed professionals, ensuring that they receive ethical and effective mental health support. Always consider factors such as the therapist's credentials, the platform's security measures, and your own comfort level with the chosen mode of communication.
